The Mid - Autumn Festival has a history of over 3,000 years, dating back to the Shang Dynasty when people worshipped the moon. Due to its significant status, poets in all dynasties have written poems about it. Stories and legends related to the Mid - Autumn Festival are widely spread among the people, and its origin has been explored by generations of Chinese. The term "Mid - Autumn" first appeared in the "Zhou Li" during the Warring States period. However, at that time, it was only related to time and season, and there was no Mid - Autumn Festival yet. In the Tang Dynasty, moon - viewing became popular, and poets created many excellent works while enjoying the moon. It is said that Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty once dreamed of going to the Moon Palace and hearing beautiful songs. In the Northern Song Dynasty, the 15th day of the eighth lunar month was officially established as the Mid - Autumn Festival. Since then, sacrificing to the moon has become popular and has been passed down as a custom ever since.
